Greater Chennai Corporation to build 20 foot overbridges, 30 AC bus shelters

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced plans to develop 20 foot overbridges at congested, high-footfall locations and establish 30 air-conditioned bus shelters across Chennai. GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran stated that consultants will be engaged for feasibility studies, with tentative locations identified in consultation with traffic police and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation. The projects will be implemented via a concession-based model, where private concessionaires cover capital costs in exchange for advertisement rights. The annual concession fee will be the key bidding parameter. The initiative aims to improve commuter amenities, pedestrian safety, and public transport infrastructure while leveraging private investment and avoiding direct capital expenditure for the GCC. Detailed technical and commercial assessments will precede final location selection and construction.
