TechChief Justice of India Surya Kant, addressing the Vice Chancellors' Conclave 2.0 at National Law University, Jodhpur, on August 16, 2026, called on national law universities (NLUs) to proactively lead the integration of technology into the legal system rather than merely adapt to it. He rejected an outright prohibition of generative AI tools in legal education, advocating instead for their transparent and supervised use in classrooms. The CJI emphasized that legal education must incorporate academic integrity and responsible AI use into curricula, and that graduates must learn to question AI outputs and exercise independent judgment. He stressed that institutions resisting technological change risk losing the opportunity to shape it, and called for collaboration among NLUs on research into algorithmic accountability, data protection, and digital access to justice.
