PoliticsThe 2026 Marine Rotation Force-Darwin (MRF-D) has become the first in its 15-year history to be certified as a Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force (SPMAGTF), a milestone validated during an exercise in the Philippines in May. Commanded by Col. George Flynn, the force of approximately 2,000 Marines operates from Darwin, Australia, and has maintained a high tempo with deployments to six or seven countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Tahiti. The certification confirms the unit's readiness for full-spectrum operations from combat to humanitarian aid. MRF-D has conducted major exercises with Australian brigades, experimented with small drones and first-person-view systems, and demonstrated robust command-and-control capabilities via satellite and high-frequency communications. The commander noted the force's unique ability to gain and maintain readiness throughout the deployment, unlike typical units that degrade after initial workup.
