PoliticsTensions are escalating in Zambia following the August 13, 2026 elections. Opposition leader Brian Mundubile of the Tonse Alliance declared himself the winner based on his alliance's parallel vote tabulation, claiming he defeated President Hakainde Hichilema. The ruling UPND party accused Mundubile of high treason. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) suspended vote counting nationwide on Friday afternoon, citing reports of violence against election officials and theft of ballot papers. The suspension is to be reviewed within 24 hours. Both the ruling party and opposition have released partial results favoring themselves. Over 8.7 million voters were registered, with high turnout reported despite logistical issues such as delayed polling station openings and power supply problems. The ECZ stated the election largely proceeded without disruption, though isolated incidents occurred, including students unable to vote at the University of Zambia and a roof blown off a polling station in Bangweulu.
