SportsAtletico Madrid officially announced the signing of Argentine center-back Cristian 'Cuti' Romero from Tottenham Hotspur. The 28-year-old defender has signed a contract until 2031. Romero, born in Córdoba, Argentina in 1998, began his career at Club Atlético Belgrano before moving to Europe with Genoa. He later played for Juventus, Atalanta (where he was named Serie A Best Defender), and Tottenham Hotspur. Over five seasons in London, he made 156 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing 7 assists, and helped Tottenham win the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League, being named tournament Best Player and final Man of the Match. For Argentina, he has 58 senior caps, contributing to Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and a runner-up finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Romero completed his medical examination at the Sports Medicine Center of the Universidad Hospital Arturo Soria in Madrid before signing the contract at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium.
