Marine Corps: 18-year-old recruit dies after physical fitness test

The Marine Corps has identified Pvt. Aiden Craig, 18, as the recruit who died on August 5 after suffering a medical emergency four days earlier during a physical fitness test at Camp Pendleton, California. Originally from Texas, Craig enlisted on June 1, 2026, and was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion. He was hospitalized at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside at the time of his death. The medical emergency occurred on the 47th training day of boot camp, when West Coast recruits take the Corps' physical fitness test. No details about the type of emergency were immediately available, and the Marine Corps is investigating the incident. Craig posthumously earned the title of Marine. Deaths during boot camp are rare given the tens of thousands of recruits trained annually.
