ConflictThe 2026 Marine Rotation Force-Darwin (MRF-D) has become the first in its 15-year history to be certified as a Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force (SPMAGTF), a milestone validated during an exercise in the Philippines in May. Commanded by Col. George Flynn, the force of approximately 2,000 Marines operates from Darwin, Australia, and has maintained a high tempo with deployments to six or seven countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Tahiti. The certification ensures the force is ready for full-spectrum operations from combat to humanitarian aid. MRF-D has also experimented with small unmanned aerial systems and first-person-view drones, reflecting the Marine Corps' evolving capabilities. The unit's ability to gain and maintain readiness throughout deployment, rather than degrade, was highlighted as a key advantage.
