On August 4th, 2026, a drone carrying 800 grams of plastic explosives was flown into the wing of a fully fueled Ukrainian Antonov An-124 cargo plane at Leipzig-Halle Airport in Germany. The bomb fell off the drone without detonating, narrowly averting a catastrophic explosion that could have destroyed the aircraft and a second An-124 parked nearby. The article argues this incident exemplifies Russian-style hybrid warfare and highlights the urgent need for European airports to enhance defenses against drone threats, given the strategic importance of these flights for Ukraine and NATO military logistics.

On the evening of August 4th, Leipzig-Halle Airport in Germany came close to disaster. A drone carrying 800 grams of plastic explosives was flown into the wing of a fully fuelled Ukrainian Antonov An-124. The bomb fell off the drone instead of detonating. Had it done so, the giant transport plane—used by Ukraine and NATO to carry military loads—would have gone up in a fireball, along with a second An-124 parked next to it.
