Parents sue Air Force Academy over graduate's suicide after sexual assault

The parents of 2nd Lt. Cailin Renee Foster, an Air Force Academy graduate who died by suicide in 2021, filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the school on July 13, 2026. The lawsuit alleges that the academy failed to protect Foster from a sexual assault during her first year in 2017, ignored prior warnings about the alleged rapist's predatory behavior, and provided inadequate mental health support after the attack. It claims systemic negligence, regulatory violations, and failures in clinical and administrative safeguards contributed to her severe psychological trauma and preventable death. The suit details that the academy did not issue a No Contact Order against the alleged attacker despite multiple reports, discouraged reporting, and failed to activate disaster mental health services after Foster's boyfriend died by suicide. Foster attempted suicide in 2020 and died six months after graduating.
