The parents of 2nd Lt. Cailin Renee Foster, an Air Force Academy graduate who died by suicide in 2021, filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the U.S. government on July 13, 2026. The suit alleges the Academy failed to protect Foster from a sexual assault by a male cadet in 2017, ignored prior warnings about his predatory behavior, and provided inadequate mental health care afterward. It claims systemic negligence, regulatory violations, and administrative failures contributed to her severe trauma and preventable death. The lawsuit details that the alleged rapist was not restricted despite multiple reports, a chaplain discouraged reporting, and the Academy did not activate its disaster mental health team after Foster's boyfriend died by suicide. Foster attempted suicide in 2020 and died six months after graduating.
