TechA federation of nearly 300 French newspapers, APIG, filed a complaint with France's competition authority on Tuesday against Google's new AI-generated search summaries, known as AI Overviews, launched in France in late July. The newspapers argue that the feature, which compiles information from various sources above regular search links, erodes traffic to their websites and violates a 2022 compensation agreement between Google and French media groups. APIG president Marc Feuillee stated that editors seek fair compensation for the use of their content, not to halt innovation. The French competition authority had already fined Google €250 million in 2024 for breaching parts of the 2022 deal. The complaint comes amid broader EU scrutiny, as the European Commission announced in December 2025 an investigation into whether Google violates competition rules by using media content for AI services without appropriate compensation.
