NATO allies convened on Wednesday to condemn Russia for recent breaches of Polish and Romanian airspace, as well as a series of drone incidents across the alliance. In a statement, allies declared they stand 'united and resolute' in defending NATO territory and commended swift responses by national authorities. The meeting followed a wave of airspace violations, including an explosive-laden drone found near a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, which forced a DHL aircraft to abort landing and collide with a suspected second drone. The facility is a key logistics hub for military supplies to Ukraine. German interior minister Alexander Dobrindt called it a 'very serious security-related event' and part of a broader hybrid threat. Earlier, Poland scrambled a fighter jet after a Russian Kh101 missile entered its airspace and crashed near the Ukrainian border. NATO allies stated Russia 'bears full responsibility' and that the incidents demonstrate 'Russia's increasing tolerance for risk.' Russia has been cited as a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security since the war in Ukraine.
Source report
NATO allies convened on Wednesday and issued a condemnation of Russia for breaches of Poland's and Romania's airspace, as well as repeated drone incidents across the alliance.
"NATO Allies made clear that they stand united and resolute in the defence of Allied territory. They commended the swift actions of NATO and national authorities in responding decisively to the events," allies said in a statement.
Recent Wave of Violations
The Wednesday morning meeting followed a new wave of airspace violations across Europe in recent weeks, testing the bloc's ability to mitigate Russian hybrid warfare.
Germany: Drone Incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport
At the start of the month, an explosive-laden drone was found directly next to a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport, prompting the German airport to boost security measures.
Later that same day, a DHL cargo aircraft was forced to abort its landing due to the airport closure and collided with what is believed to have been a second drone.
The attempted attack targeted a facility that serves as a major European logistics hub for military supplies for Ukraine.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as "a very serious security-related event" and part of a broader "hybrid threat," while never naming Russia explicitly.
Poland: Missile Incursion
One week earlier, Poland scrambled a fighter jet after a Russian Kh101 missile entered its airspace before crashing roughly 100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
Polish officials rapidly blamed Moscow, citing evidence of the origin of the missile, and later said the country's civilian warning system would be updated in case of a new incursion to better inform its population of possible risks.
NATO's Response
On Wednesday, NATO allies said Russia "bears full responsibility for the airspace violations," adding it demonstrates "Russia's increasing tolerance for risk."
Russia has since the war in Ukraine been cited as one of NATO's main threats. In July, NATO leaders described Moscow as a "long-term threat" to Euro-Atlantic security and stability when they last met in Ankara.
Broader Context
European countries along the Russian border have faced repeated drone incursions in recent months, with Russia jamming and interfering with Ukrainian drones, leading them to stray into Baltic airspace.
