OtherThe Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has received special authorization to sell over 100,000 surplus M14 rifles to civilians, marking the first time this historic rifle will be sold as surplus. The M14, which served as the standard U.S. service rifle from 1957 until being replaced by the M16 in 1967, must be permanently converted from fully automatic to semi-automatic to comply with federal regulations. CMP Chairman Jerry O'Keefe stated that the organization worked closely with federal partners on the conversion process. While initial availability was expected in 2026, first sales will likely occur in early 2027 due to high demand and the need to build inventory. The M14 had a short active service life due to quality control issues and its unsuitability for jungle warfare in Vietnam, but remains popular among firearms enthusiasts. The CMP, a federally chartered non-profit, has previously sold surplus M1 Garands and 1911 handguns.
