Lockheed Martin Next Generation Interceptor passes two key tests

Lockheed Martin announced that its Next Generation Interceptor (NGI), designed to replace the troubled Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system, passed two major milestones: a critical burst test of its second-stage motor case and a successful static fire test of the stage 2 rocket motor. The program, awarded an $18 billion contract in 2024, faced an 18-month delay due to technical problems with the solid rocket motor, inertial measurement unit, and sensors, as disclosed by MDA director Gen. Heath Collins in April. Despite the delay, the company expects to clear the critical design review by the end of 2026 and field the interceptor by 2030. NGI is slated to be part of the Trump administration's Golden Dome defense system. The Space and Missile Defense Symposium this week will feature updates on Golden Dome by director Gen. Michael Guetlein.
