OtherThe Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has received special authorization to sell more than 100,000 surplus M14 rifles to the public, marking the first time this historic firearm will be sold as surplus. The M14, which served as the U.S. standard service rifle from 1957 until being replaced by the M16 in 1967, must be permanently converted from fully automatic to semi-automatic to comply with federal regulations. CMP Chairman Jerry O'Keefe stated that extensive work with federal partners ensured the conversion process meets legal requirements. While initial availability was expected in 2026, first sales will likely occur in early 2027 due to high demand and the need to build inventory. The M14 has a complicated military history, including service in Vietnam and later use as a designated marksman rifle in Afghanistan and Iraq. CMP, a federally chartered non-profit, has previously sold surplus M1 Garands and 1911 handguns.
