FinanceOpenAI has completed a secondary share sale totaling roughly $7 billion, allowing current and former employees to sell stock at the company's $852 billion valuation. The tender offer, first reported by Bloomberg and confirmed by CNBC, has been in the works since OpenAI closed its record-breaking $122 billion funding round in March. The deal provides near-term liquidity for employees ahead of the company's potentially massive IPO, for which it confidentially filed with the SEC in June. This is part of OpenAI's pre-IPO strategy, following previous tender offers of $6.6 billion in October 2025 and $1.5 billion in 2024. Rival Anthropic is in a similar IPO preparation position.
