Lockheed Martin Next Generation Interceptor passes two key tests

Lockheed Martin announced that its Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) successfully completed a critical burst test of its second-stage motor case and a static fire test of its stage 2 rocket motor. These milestones come ahead of the program's critical design review (CDR), expected by the end of 2026. The NGI, awarded an $18 billion contract in 2024, is designed to replace the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system and will be part of the Trump administration's Golden Dome defense architecture. The program faced an 18-month delay due to technical problems with the solid rocket motor, inertial measurement unit, and sensors, as acknowledged by MDA Director Gen. Heath Collins in April 2026. The Government Accountability Office noted it could not assess the program due to lack of long-term baselines. Lockheed aims to field the interceptor by 2030.
