OtherThe Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has received special authorization to sell more than 100,000 surplus M14 rifles to the public, marking the first time this historic U.S. military rifle will be sold as surplus. The M14, which served as the standard U.S. service rifle from 1957 until it was replaced by the M16 in 1967, has been out of service for nearly 60 years. CMP worked with federal partners to convert the rifles from fully automatic to permanently semi-automatic to comply with federal regulations. CMP Chairman Jerry O'Keefe stated that due to extraordinary demand, the organization will spend months building inventory before the first sales, which are expected in early 2027. The M14 saw combat in Vietnam and later as a designated marksman rifle in Afghanistan and Iraq.
