US Air Force AI pilot completes 27 autonomous intercepts on 34-year-old F-16D

The US Air Force and Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works conducted a series of flight tests where an AI agent flew the X-62A VISTA, a modified F-16D that first flew in 1992, to autonomously intercept a T-38 Talon trainer. Using live infrared data from a Legion Pod, the AI completed 27 autonomous intercepts across eight sorties. This marks a significant advancement as previous AI demonstrations relied on simulated targets or pre-generated datasets. The AI integration, software validation, and ground testing were completed in roughly three months using Lockheed's 'Supermassive' AI development framework. Officials stated the technology aims to reduce pilot task saturation during complex missions, allowing aircrews to focus on tactical decision-making while autonomous software handles time-sensitive actions.
