Lockheed Martin completes burst test of Next Generation Interceptor second-stage motor case

Lockheed Martin announced the successful completion of a critical burst test on the Next Generation Interceptor's (NGI) second-stage motor case. The test, conducted by filling the composite motor case with a carbon-fiber reinforced water vessel and pressurizing it beyond anticipated launch conditions, validated the component's structural integrity. This milestone keeps the NGI program on track for its Critical Design Review later in 2024 and toward fielding by 2030. The interceptor is designed for the Missile Defense Agency's Ground-based Midcourse Defense system to counter emerging long-range ballistic missile threats. Lockheed Martin is also investing in digital design tools and new manufacturing facilities in Alabama, including a Munitions Production Centre in Troy, to support future NGI production. The company was named prime contractor for the NGI program in April 2024.
