Spokane VA Medical Center Evacuated as Wildfire Forces Over 60,000 to Flee

The Mann-Grandstaff Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, was evacuated on August 1, 2026, due to the Spokane Complex Fire, which has destroyed at least 600 buildings and burned over 8,000 acres as of August 3. The fire, fueled by high winds, is 0% contained and has forced the evacuation of more than 60,000 people. Patients were transferred to local hospitals, with 27 being cared for at area shelters. The medical center, located less than a third of a mile from the fire perimeter, remains closed. VA outpatient clinics and business operation centers in the Spokane area are also closed. The facility has 46 beds and over 1,400 full-time positions. VA officials expressed condolences to victims, including staff members who lost property.
