The cyclosporiasis outbreak in the United States has turned deadly, with Michigan reporting the first two confirmed deaths from the parasitic infection. Both individuals had significant underlying health conditions. Michigan has tallied 11,234 cases and 193 hospitalizations, far exceeding CDC figures of at least 1,947 cases across nine states, suggesting federal agencies may be underreporting the scope. The outbreak has been linked to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms, a major produce supplier to Taco Bell and other retailers. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. noted challenges in tracking the disease due to a one-to-two-week incubation period. Cases have been reported across 45 states in 2026.
