EnvironmentOn August 1, 2026, the Mann-Grandstaff Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, was evacuated due to the Spokane Complex Fire, which had burned over 8,000 acres and destroyed at least 600 buildings as of August 3. The fire, fueled by high winds, came within a third of a mile of the facility. An unknown number of patients were transferred to local hospitals, with 27 patients being cared for at area shelters. The medical center and its outpatient clinics remain closed. Over 60,000 people have been evacuated from the area. The fire is 0% contained. VA officials expressed condolences to victims, including staff members who lost property.
