Russia Floats Out Sixth Yasen-M-class Nuclear Submarine Ulyanovsk

On July 28, 2026, Russia's Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk floated out the nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine Ulyanovsk, the sixth Yasen-M (Project 885M) class boat to complete its hull construction phase. The vessel will now undergo mooring trials, sea trials, and state acceptance trials, with delivery planned for December 2027. Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev stated the submarine is intended to join the Northern Fleet. The Yasen-M design is a multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine capable of anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, land-attack strikes, and intelligence collection. It features heavyweight torpedo tubes with vertical launch systems for Kalibr, P-800 Oniks, and potentially Tsirkon hypersonic missiles. The shipyard also laid down the ninth Yasen-M boat, Murmansk, in June 2026. The class is designed with quieter propulsion and reduced acoustic signature compared to earlier Russian attack submarines.
