Brentford sign Mamadou Sangaré from Lens for club-record £41 million fee

Brentford have officially announced the signing of Mali international midfielder Mamadou Sangaré from Lens for a club-record transfer fee of £41 million. The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract with a one-year club option. Sangaré joins after an outstanding debut Ligue 1 season, where he helped Lens finish second in the league and win the French Cup for the first time in their history. He made 33 appearances across all competitions, scoring 3 goals and providing 3 assists, earning a spot in the UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Season and the Marc-Vivien Foé Award for the best African player in Ligue 1. Brentford head coach Keith Andrews praised Sangaré's qualities and fit with the squad. Sangaré began his career in Mali, moved to Red Bull Salzburg in 2020, and developed through loans before joining Lens in August 2025. He has earned 16 caps for Mali and played in all matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the team reach the quarter-finals.
