Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company x.AI has filed a lawsuit against Minnesota's first-in-the-nation law banning programs that create and post deepfake nude images without consent. The law imposes fines of up to $500,000 per unlawful access, download, or use. x.AI does not dispute the state's interest in preventing non-consensual deepfake nudes but argues the law goes too far, exposing protected speech to civil liability and government sanctions. The company claims the law is unconstitutional and seeks to have it blocked or struck down entirely before its August 1 effective date. x.AI has threatened to limit services for Minnesota users if the law takes effect.
