Atletico Madrid 4-1 Getafe: Lookman brace, Ortiz goal in preseason opener

Neither Atletico, still fielding a half-strength starting eleven, nor Getafe, packed with youngsters and barely recognizable with only Soria, Djené, and Davinchi, will resemble the sides seen in this red-and-white summer debut. Yet when evidence jumps out at you, the first impression is enough: Simeone has goals secured with Lookman and Arnau Ortiz, while Bordalás can rest easy regarding his team's style and intensity.

Lookman's Instant Impact

Five minutes were all it took for the Nigerian to make clear he returns with the same impact he has shown since arriving in January, scoring nine goals (and four assists) in 24 appearances. Starting from the left flank, he had no trouble being first to the area to push in the ball that rebounded off the post after a shot from Mendoza. He would also prove 'invisible' at the far post to head in a good cross from Carlos Martín from the opposite flank. A brace in just 35 minutes confirmed that the great winter signing remains in form this summer.

Arnau Ortiz Stakes His Claim

With a completely new lineup in the second half, it was Arnau Ortiz who took center stage to show that if the four preseason games are a 'casting' to decide his future, he is ready to earn a spot in the squad. Just ten minutes were enough for him to display his verticality and goalscoring instinct. Beyond his class, after surprising with a run into the area, he finished with an expensive 9-rated dribble before scoring his goal.

Getafe's Brief Response

It was the goal that once again confirmed Atletico's superiority, even though Getafe managed to cut the deficit just before halftime. Álvaro Gutiérrez found that to beat Oblak you have to try up to three times: he headed against the crossbar and assisted the Slovenian's miracle save against Joselu's point-blank shot after his rebound, before finally pushing the ball into the back of the net.

Obed Vargas Rounds Off the Rout

Beyond the two daggers Simeone enjoys on his left, the test also showed that:

• The 'experiment' of placing Mendoza as a second striker in the Griezmann style could become a habit.
• Although Spanish was not among the five languages mastered by Hjulmand, the new signing has plenty of character to perfectly claim a penalty from the referee and criticize the intensity of the opponents (two yellow cards after official-match tackles made clear Getafe did not come for a walk).
• Jorge Domínguez, at just 16 years old, is first-team material even before reaching adulthood.
• Obed Vargas, even if rounding off the rout with a penalty, also raises his hand to stay.
