Paulo Fonseca: Lyon's 4-0 defeat to Betis a wake-up call ahead of Champions League qualifier

Swept 4-0 by Real Betis Balompié, Olympique Lyonnais failed in their last preparation match. A visibly concerned Paulo Fonseca has issued a warning just days before a crucial Champions League fixture.

A Promising Pre-Season Derailed

For several weeks, the outlook appeared positive for Olympique Lyonnais. On the transfer front, the Rhône club announced the arrival of Loïs Openda from Juventus, adding to previous signings:

The mood was upbeat heading into Wednesday's final warm-up match in Andalusia against Real Betis Balompié.

A Worrying Defeat

Against the Verdiblancos, Lyon displayed a concerning performance, marked by defensive fragility. The team conceded two goals from set pieces and struggled to cope with opposition transitions, ultimately suffering a 4–0 defeat.

Speaking after the match, head coach Paulo Fonseca delivered a scathing assessment:

"We reach the end of the match and the feelings are negative. I think we had a lot of difficulty. We have a lot of the ball, but we don't manage to be effective enough and we lose a lot in transition. We concede three goals from corners (2 defensive and 1 offensive). We lacked energy. We individually lacked aggressiveness. Sometimes, these are results that bring the team to the truth. We must persevere with a view to the next match."

Fonseca Sounds the Alarm

With just six days remaining before Lyon's trip to the Czech Republic to face Sparta Prague in the third qualifying round of the Champions League, Fonseca made his concerns clear:

"If we play with this aggressiveness, it will be difficult. It's a negative result. It worries us, we must do more. Until now, we had good signals, but today it's a worrying match. But maybe it's a negative result that could be positive for the group. This result brings us back down to earth after positive results. We must analyze now, but we lacked offensive and defensive aggressiveness."

The Portuguese coach, who has yet to field new signing Loïs Openda, hopes to have him available for the Sparta Prague clash and stressed the need for key players to return:

"Yes, I hope to have Loïs Openda for the first match, we need him. We have quality young players, but they are not ready to play such an important match for us. They need time. When the level rises, it becomes difficult and they are not ready for such an important match. I will analyze what we did and find solutions to have a different performance in the next match."

Looking Ahead

The defeat serves as a wake-up call for Les Gones, who will be expected to bounce back when they face Sparta Prague on Tuesday.
