HYDERABAD — The Government Railway Police (GRP), Hyderabad, and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested a 20-year-old inter-State drug courier and seized 16.92 kg of marijuana worth an estimated ₹8.46 lakh at Hyderabad railway station on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Akash Singh, a native of Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended during a joint checking drive near the entrance to platform no. 4. Another suspect accompanying him managed to escape.
During interrogation, Akash allegedly told police that he had agreed to transport marijuana from Visakhapatnam to New Delhi for ₹15,000 per trip at the behest of a man identified as Jafar. He allegedly travelled to Visakhapatnam, where two bags containing the contraband were handed over to him before he boarded the Godavari Express for New Delhi.
Police said Akash and another accused, identified as Manish, arrived at Hyderabad railway station on Tuesday morning, where they came under suspicion during the checking drive. While Manish escaped, Akash was apprehended with two bags containing 16.92 kg of marijuana.
Police seized 14 packets of marijuana concealed in two bags, along with a mobile phone. A case has been registered under Sections 8(c) read with 20(b)(ii)(B) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Police identified three other accused — Jafar, Miya, and Manish — as absconding. Further investigation is under way.
