Facility Expansion
On Friday, Lenovo held a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the expansion of its Whitsett facility. The company invested millions of dollars into the site, doubling its footprint to 890,000 square feet. Currently, 400 line workers are employed at the facility, with the capacity to expand to 1,000 workers in the near future.
Driving Force: Artificial Intelligence
According to Ashley Gorakhpurwalla, Executive VP and President of Lenovo's Infrastructure Solutions Group, the investment is driven by the rise of artificial intelligence.
"AI is moving from the hype cycle now into the hero cycle," Gorakhpurwalla said. "Behind every AI breakthrough, it's powerful, powerful infrastructure. As technology becomes more advanced, building high-quality infrastructure closer to our customers is becoming more important than ever."
Many of Lenovo's customers are seeking to increase reliance on U.S.-produced hardware, viewing trusted infrastructure as a catalyst for AI adoption.
Regional Advantages
Ben Massey, VP of Supply Chain for Lenovo, addressed questions about North Carolina's suitability for technology manufacturing:
"We've got an arc from the Triangle to the Triad with thousands of engineers, thousands of manufacturing people in R&D who can work in supply chain, people who can all work together to bring this technology together with speed. Faster product development to mass production, shorter customer lead times, and greater end-to-end cost efficiency."
Lenovo's main U.S. R&D hub in Morrisville is just over an hour's drive from the Whitsett facility along Interstate 40. The company also draws talent from nearby universities including NC State, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest, as well as the state's community college system.
Rapid Deployment
Lenovo and its local contractors transformed the facility from an empty warehouse to a fully functioning server production line in nine months. This included securing up to 20 MW of electricity capacity from Duke Energy.

Kitting Area
- Size: 26,000 square feet
- Lines: 10 kitting lines
- Output: 200 racks per week (expandable to 400)
- Team: 50 members processing over 150,000 parts per day
Assembly Lines
- Size: 53,000 square feet (roughly double the kitting area)
- Lines: 7 assembly lines
- Capacity: 1,400 server nodes per day across 28 assembly stations
- Production rate: One server every 60 seconds
Workforce
- Current operators: Approximately 380
- Full capacity: 1,000 operators running three shifts
- Training: Employees receive roughly 1,000 hours of training and rotate through different phases of the building process
Testing
- Testing pods: 10 thermally controlled pods
- Test racks: 16 per pod (L10 testing)
