Liverpool's US pre-season tour disrupted by flight cancellation, team to arrive hours before Wrexham friendly

Andoni Iraola's preparations have been disrupted after Liverpool's pre-season tour was hit by travel chaos. The Reds will now land in New York just hours before kick-off in Wednesday's friendly against Wrexham.

Flight Cancelled Due to Weather

Liverpool's flight from Chicago was cancelled on Tuesday due to adverse weather conditions, including thunderstorms and heavy rain. The squad had planned to arrive in New York the night before the match but were forced to change their plans and will now only arrive on the day of the game.

The team is based in Chicago during their tour of the United States and returned there following Saturday's 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Nashville.

Impact on Kit Launch

The cancellation has not only affected Iraola and his players' match preparations but also the reveal of Liverpool's new away kit. Several first-team players were scheduled to attend an event at Brooklyn's Skylight at the Refinery to showcase Adidas' latest product.

Instead, Liverpool legends Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler stepped in to model what the Reds will be wearing on the road for the 2026-27 season.

Match Details

Liverpool's clash with Wrexham will be played at Yankee Stadium, home of baseball's New York Yankees. The stadium holds 47,309 fans and holds special significance for Iraola, who ended his playing career with New York City FC in 2016 — the stadium is also home to that club.

Squad Update

Despite an injury to Joe Gomez in Nashville, Iraola will have a larger squad to choose from. Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz, and Alexander Isak have all returned to training, although they may not feature this early in their respective pre-seasons.

Speaking at a press conference last week, Iraola said:

"The three players that are going to join us are going to be [in the] second week fully with us. The ones that were [eliminated] from the World Cup, they all — because of different reasons — have individual days for their arrivals, but I think the sooner we can start working with them and they can understand what we want from them the better.

"Individually, I talked with the three of them, they know the main things, but I am looking forward to having them here with the group and to go slowly, slowly with recovering bodies [to the squad]."

Meanwhile, Alisson Becker, Cody Gakpo, and Virgil van Dijk will begin their individual programmes at Liverpool's AXA Training Centre in Kirkby while their teammates are in the United States.

"They will, in terms of dates of training, be very similar but they will start training at the AXA in Liverpool," Iraola confirmed. "Because of different reasons, especially Virgil because he has..."
