Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation (FFF), stated on July 29, 2026, that he did not discuss salary with Zinedine Zidane when appointing him as the new coach of the French national team. Diallo emphasized that the conversation focused on desire and winning, not money. The article notes that French federation salaries are capped at €450,000 annually unless a ministerial derogation is granted. Zidane's predecessor, Didier Deschamps, earned €3.8 million per year. According to the report, Zidane could earn €300,000 per month (€3.6 million annually) excluding bonuses, or up to €450,000 per month (€5.4 million annually) with bonuses, which would be a record for a French national team coach. Zidane has committed to the role until 2030.

Officially installed on Tuesday, Zinédine Zidane was not difficult to convince, according to FFF President Philippe Diallo. The head of the French Football Federation assured this Wednesday that he did not even have to "talk about money" with the new coach of Les Bleus.
A Deal Driven by Passion, Not Pay
The takeover of the French national team by Zinédine Zidane was so desired by all parties that the former Bleu and Philippe Diallo did not discuss finances, the Federation president confirmed on Wednesday.
"Sincerely, it's not a question of money," said Diallo, questioned on France Inter about Zidane's salary at the helm of Les Bleus.
"I met Zidane in February 2025. We didn't talk about money. We talked about desire, a federation that wants the French team to win, and a player who dreams in blue. And we didn't talk about money," he insisted, refusing to disclose the salary of Didier Deschamps' successor.
A Derogation for a Maximum Salary
As a reminder, salaries in French federations are capped at €450,000 annually, except by ministerial derogation, following the adoption of the professional sports reform on July 21.
Before Zinédine Zidane, Didier Deschamps received an annual salary of €3.8 million. According to our information, the new coach could earn €300,000 per month — thus €3.6 million annually — excluding bonuses. With bonuses, it could rise to €450,000 per month, or €5.4 million per year, which would constitute a record for a French national team coach.
"I believe that's not what our fans expect. What our fans expect is to see Zidane on the bench, to see the French team win, and to ensure that the DNA of our French team — which is the gathering of the French people behind it — can be fulfilled through victories," added Philippe Diallo the day after the appointment of the new French coach.
The 1998 World Cup winner has committed until 2030.
