After years of anticipation, the world of Orïsha has finally arrived on screen. Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Children of Blood and Bone, the long-awaited adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel that became a global publishing phenomenon in 2018.
The trailer introduces Thuso Mbedu as Zélie Adebola, a young maji determined to restore magic to a kingdom where its practitioners have been hunted into near extinction. As oppressive rulers tighten their grip on Orïsha, Zélie embarks on a dangerous quest alongside her brother Tzain (Tosin Cole), Princess Amari (Amandla Stenberg) and Prince Inan (Damson Idris), setting the stage for an uprising that could reshape the fate of the realm.
Packed with sweeping landscapes, elaborate costumes and bursts of elemental magic, the first footage showcases the scale of the production while introducing several of its formidable supporting players:
- Viola Davis appears as the wise mentor Mama Agba
- Chiwetel Ejiofor and Regina King portray the royal rulers determined to suppress magic at any cost
- Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo and Lashana Lynch also feature in the star-studded ensemble
The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, whose previous work on The Woman King established her reputation as a filmmaker. Speaking at the trailer launch, the director said authenticity was central to the production, explaining that much of the film was shot across South Africa and the Canary Islands to create a tangible world rather than relying heavily on digital environments.
First published in 2018, Children of Blood and Bone launched Adeyemi’s Legacy of Orïsha trilogy and quickly became one of the defining young adult fantasy novels of the past decade. Its blend of West African mythology, political allegory and coming-of-age adventure drew comparisons to major fantasy franchises while establishing a distinct identity of its own.
Children of Blood and Bone is scheduled to arrive in theatres and IMAX on January 15, 2027, with Paramount positioning the adaptation as one of its biggest fantasy releases in recent years.
