A Delhi court on Tuesday deferred to July 13 its verdict in the case concerning the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 north-east Delhi riots. Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain is among the 11 accused in the case.
Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh of Karkardooma courts stated that the judgment is still being prepared. This marks the third occasion in the past month that the verdict has been deferred.
Prosecution's Account
According to the prosecution:
- Ankit returned home from work on February 25, 2020, before stepping out again.
- When he did not return, his family launched a search and was later informed of his death.
- His body was subsequently recovered from a drain near a mosque in the Chand Bagh Pulia area.
- An FIR was registered at the Dayalpur police station after his father, Ravinder Kumar, filed a complaint accusing Mr. Hussain and others of murdering Ankit.
Charges Framed
On March 24, 2023, the trial court framed charges against the accused for:
- Rioting with deadly weapons
- Promoting enmity between groups
- Murder
- Criminal conspiracy
The former councillor also faces charges of abetment and making statements conducive to public mischief.
