Following a disastrous 2026 World Cup campaign where Tunisia lost all three matches, the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) has appointed local coach Mouine Chaabani as the new head coach on a four-year contract. Chaabani, 45, replaces Hervé Renard, whose brief tenure was limited to the end of the World Cup after he replaced Sabri Lamouchi following a 5-1 defeat to Sweden. Chaabani previously coached Espérance Sportive de Tunis, winning two CAF Champions League titles in 2018 and 2019, and later coached in Egypt and Morocco, leading Renaissance Sportive de Berkane. His former club RS Berkane released him early from his contract, citing the importance of leading the national team. The appointment marks the start of a rebuilding cycle for Tunisian football.

Coming out of a disastrous 2026 World Cup campaign—marked by the hasty departure of Sabri Lamouchi and the inconclusive short stint of Hervé Renard—the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) has appointed local technician Mouine Chaabani to rebuild the national team.
The FTF announced the appointment on Tuesday, opening a new cycle after a World Cup that ended with three defeats in three matches and the sudden departure of Sabri Lamouchi after the first matchday.
"His contract is for a duration of four years," the FTF stated in a press release.
A Team to Rebuild
Tunisian Mouine Chaâbani, 45, succeeds Hervé Renard, whose mission at the helm was limited to the end of the World Cup. Renard had replaced Sabri Lamouchi at short notice after Lamouchi was dismissed following a stinging 5-1 defeat against Sweden in the opening match.
Chaâbani previously coached Espérance Sportive de Tunis, winning two CAF Champions League titles in 2018 and 2019. He later continued his career in Egypt and then Morocco, where he successfully led Renaissance Sportive de Berkane.
In mid-July, RS Berkane announced that Chaâbani had been approached by the Tunisian Federation. Although his contract with the club did not expire until June 30, 2027, the club said it had decided to show "understanding" due to "the particular importance of the mission to lead the national team." The club also praised the "great professionalism" of the technician, stating that he had contributed to "writing an important page in the history of RS Berkane."
