Company Background
Founded in 2006, the company is part of the Samlerhuset Group, Europe's largest coin company, which is based in the Netherlands. The UK entity serves as a major retailer for collectors, offering specially minted items celebrating British royalty and military anniversaries, including D-Day and World War I.
The London Mint Office acts as a distributor for several major world mints, including:
- The Royal Australian Mint
- The Royal Canadian Mint
- The South African Mint
- The New Zealand Mint
- The People's Bank of China
- The French State Mint
Its parent company, Samlerhuset—which is Norwegian—owns The Mint of Norway, the official manufacturer of the Nobel Peace Prize's 18-carat gold medals.
The London Mint Office (not to be confused with The Royal Mint, the government body responsible for the UK's official legal tender) was also an official licensee for the London 2012 Olympic Games, after Samlerhuset secured rights to produce official Olympic merchandise for collectors.
Administration Filing
On Tuesday, law firm TLT filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator for The London Mint Office in the English High Court, according to court listings.
This development follows a Sky News report on Tuesday that the company was in talks for a sale, with restructuring and consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal brought in to try to secure a deal.
Financial Performance
According to accounts filed at Companies House for 2024, The London Mint Office reported a net pre-tax loss of nearly £1.8 million, amid challenges created by the adoption of new IT systems.
