Swiss defender Eray Cömert joins Torino on free transfer after Valencia exit

Eray Cömert has definitively ended his time as a Valencia player. The Swiss international defender said goodbye this Monday to the club and the Valencia fans through an emotional message posted on his social media, one month after his contract with the Mestalla entity expired on June 30.

In his farewell letter, the centre-back admitted that he still hoped for a possible continuation at the club:

"It is not easy for me to write these words, because there was always a small hope that we could continue living many more beautiful moments together."

The footballer also stated that there were attempts to extend the contractual relationship that did not bear fruit:

"Now that everything seemed to start again, and although both parties tried to make it happen, it was not possible. Sometimes football is like that, and some things are simply not meant to happen."

Current Defensive Situation at Valencia

Valencia this season has centre-backs:

• Tárrega
• De Haas
• Diakhaby — with many doubts about his performance due to injury risk
• Copete — injured, with no concrete return date (September–October)

Additionally, Iker Córdoba is participating in preseason after closing his loan to Mirandés.

Next Destination: Torino

According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the centre-back has an agreement to sign for two seasons with Torino of Serie A.

Cömert's Farewell Message

In his message posted on Instagram, Cömert thanked Valencia for the opportunity to play "in one of the biggest clubs in Europe" and highlighted his pride in having defended the Valencia crest and played at Mestalla.

"During every second I wore the Valencia shirt, I tried to give 100% for this club. My goal was always to succeed at Valencia and become an important piece of the club."

Career at Valencia

Arrival and Early Days

The defender arrived at Valencia in January 2022 from Basel, in a deal closed during the winter market of the 2021–22 season, when José Bordalás was on the Mestalla bench and Corona served as sporting director.

Valencia bet on signing a player who was already a full international for Switzerland, although his first months were marked by a lack of competitive rhythm after a difficult period with the Swiss team, which sent him to the stands after he refused to renew.

First Stint (2021–22 & 2022–23)

• Played the final stretch of the 2021–22 season
• Part of the squad that reached the Copa del Rey final
• In the 2022–23 season, started by Gattuso, he participated regularly in a particularly difficult year for the team, which achieved survival in the First Division on the final matchday
• Starred in a memorable action at Mestalla, cutting off a counterattack by Vinicius and clearing the ball that the Brazilian was driving with another ball that was on the pitch at that moment

Loan Spells

After not being counted on by Rubén Baraja, the centre-back was:

1. Loaned to Nantes (France) in August 2023 for the 2023–24 season
2. Loaned to Valladolid for the 2024–25 campaign, alongside Cenk Ozkacar

Final Season (2025–26)

With Carlos Corberán not very convinced of what the centre-back could offer him, Cömert regained prominence during the second half of the 2025–26 season, taking advantage of injuries to Diakhaby and Copete. It was then that he had his best months as a Valencia player.

His performance opened the door to a possible renewal, although ultimately the conversations did not bear fruit and the player was left to depart.
