Barcelona president Joan Laporta has set a firm deadline for the club's offer to sign Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid, stating the offer expires between the last week of July and the first week of August. The deadline, which begins on July 27, 2026, is driven by sporting demands from coach Hansi Flick, who wants to know his squad composition early. Atlético Madrid has firmly opposed selling the player, with a director stating they will not sell for any price. Barcelona claims to have a Plan B if the Álvarez deal falls through. The only potential change would be if Álvarez publicly reiterates his desire to leave Atlético.

Immediately after taking office again as club president, Joan Laporta sent a clear message regarding Barcelona's interest in Julián Álvarez: "We have made an offer, but this offer is not unlimited in time." Later, in New York, where he accompanied the Spanish national team in its last two World Cup matches, he set a deadline. "The offer's limit is between the last week of July and the first week of August."
Today, Monday, July 27, the deadline outlined by the Barcelona president begins to take effect. A limit defined more by sporting demands than by a negotiation tactic with Atlético de Madrid, a club that from the very start showed its firm opposition to selling the player.
"If their offer is unlimited in time, our response is infinite. We are not selling Julián for 100, 150, or 200 million," said the Madrid club's director.
Sporting Pressure from Flick
From a sporting perspective, Hansi Flick is pushing to have his '9' as soon as possible, or at least to know which elements he will have available in the squad. The German does not want to wait until the last day of the transfer window to know who he can count on.
In this regard, Barcelona claims they have a Plan B in case, as it seems, the Julián option fades away.
What Could Change the Situation
The only thing that could alter the course of events would be a new statement from Julián reiterating his desire to leave Atlético de Madrid.
