Hamburg Police: 21-year-old driver loses control at high speed, suspected illegal street race

Suspected Illegal Race in Hamburg City Center

A 21-year-old driver lost control of his car in front of the Deichtortunnel and crashed into a railway bridge, sending debris into a second vehicle. Police suspect an illegal street race and deployed a drone for the accident investigation.

According to a police spokeswoman, the two cars were traveling side by side at high speed on Amsinckstraße during the night leading into Monday. At the entrance to the Deichtortunnel near the main train station, the 21-year-old lost control.

• The driver suffered minor injuries; his vehicle was declared a total loss.
• Debris struck the second car, whose 20-year-old driver remained uninjured.
• The Deichtortunnel was closed toward the city center for seven hours, until the morning.
• Police are asking witnesses for information.

Separate Incident: Woman Trapped in Wreck on A7

In another accident, a woman was seriously injured on the A7 between Egestorf and Garlstorf (Harburg district). According to a police spokesman, the car—presumably the only vehicle involved—left the road after the 61-year-old driver experienced a microsleep.

• The car hit a guide post and overturned.
• The driver was able to exit the vehicle with minor injuries.
• His female passenger was trapped and had to be cut out of the car; she sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital by rescue helicopter.
• A dog was also in the car and was taken to a veterinary clinic for precautionary examination.
• The highway was completely closed toward Hamburg for two hours, resulting in an eight-kilometer-long traffic jam. Detours were also overcrowded.
