This article, the first in a five-part series on fan songs, details how Pierre Bachelet's 'Les Corons' spontaneously became the unofficial anthem of RC Lens supporters. The song was first played at Stade Bollaert-Delelis in February 2005, four days after Bachelet's death, to honor his memory. It quickly became a staple of the crowd. The article highlights a recent moment in May when the song was sung by both Lens and Nice supporters at the Stade de France before the French Cup final, which Lens won 3-1. Former RC Lens president Gervais Martel described the communion as an incredible and great moment in the club's history.

"To the north, there were the mining towns / The earth was coal / The sky was the horizon / The men were deep miners..."
On May 22, at the Stade de France, a familiar atmosphere took hold ahead of the French Cup final between Lens and Nice (3-1). The Dionysian venue vibrated to the lyrics of "Les Corons," sung at full voice by a combined choir of Artesian and Azurean supporters, accompanied by the Republican Guard.
"It was incredible," said former RC Lens president Gervais Martel (1988–2012, 2013–2017), still moved. "This communion, along with the victory, will remain a great moment in the club's history."
