Assam flood death toll reaches 66; BJP asks party workers to donate for relief

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announces clothing distribution for 4 lakh women and children; State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi accuses government of failing flood victims

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appealed to its party workers for funds to provide relief to those affected by the floods in Assam, as the death toll reached 66 by Saturday night (July 25, 2026).

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, approximately 94% of the more than 7.5 lakh affected individuals are from the three eastern Assam districts of Charaideo, Jorhat, and Sivasagar — all bordering Nagaland. Floodwaters are now receding.

Relief Measures Announced

On Sunday (July 26, 2026), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that clothing would be distributed to 4 lakh women and children across the four most severely affected districts — Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat — in that order.

"The BJP will require ₹12 crore to undertake this relief measure. I appeal to our party workers in and outside Assam to contribute to this noble cause," Mr. Sarma said.

He advised BJP workers to hand over donations of up to ₹2,000 to their local MLA, while amounts exceeding ₹2,000 should be deposited into the BJP Assam's bank account.

"Team Assam stands shoulder to shoulder with every flood-affected family, working day and night on relief and rescue efforts. My colleagues, administration and local communities are united during Assam floods. Together, we will overcome this challenge," the Chief Minister added.

Agricultural Support

State Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika announced that the department would distribute free paddy seeds and seedlings to flood-affected farmers in Charaideo, Jorhat, and Sivasagar within the next four to five days.

Political Responses

Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal, president of the All India United Democratic Front and MLA from Binnakandi constituency in central Assam, was among the first politicians to reach out to flood-hit communities in the three districts. He announced a personal contribution of ₹2 crore.

Raijor Dal MLAs Akhil Gogoi and Mehbook Mukhtar also distributed truckloads of food items in Sivasagar district.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who visited affected areas on Saturday, reaffirmed the Centre's commitment, stating that it was working closely with the Assam government to provide timely assistance.

Opposition Criticism

Assam Congress president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi criticised the State government, accusing it of failing to provide adequate and prompt assistance to flood victims.

"People affected by the floods deserve timely support and comprehensive rehabilitation. The government must prioritise relief measures over political considerations," he said at a Congress event in Morigaon, central Assam, urging party workers to remain connected with the public.
