FinanceThe Italian Navy will receive its new U212 Near Future Submarines (NFS) earlier than planned after a €317 million ($361 million) contract amendment was signed between Fincantieri and OCCAR on July 23. The deal accelerates delivery of the fourth submarine by two years to 2032, allowing one new vessel per year from 2029. All four boats are under construction at Fincantieri's Muggiano shipyard, with the first keel laid in February. The amendment expands Fincantieri's role to include fitting advanced countermeasure systems from subsidiary WASS and providing enhanced logistical support. The submarines feature lithium-ion propulsion batteries, an advanced combat management system, and a higher proportion of Italian-made technology, improving stealth, endurance, and cyber resilience. The program supports Italy's national industrial base and maintains skills at the historic shipyard.
