Infantino congratulates Argentina on World Cup silver medal, omits controversies

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has published on its official website a congratulatory letter from FIFA President Gianni Infantino to AFA President Claudio Tapia, following Argentina's defeat in the World Cup final against Spain (1-0, a.e.t.) on Sunday.

While the letter may not have been intended for public release, the AFA chose to share it. In the correspondence, Infantino offers glowing praise for Argentina's tournament performance, making no mention of the numerous controversies that surrounded the team throughout the competition.

Infantino's letter notably omits any reference to the controversies that marked Argentina's campaign. Egypt coach Hossam Hassan had publicly accused FIFA of favoring Argentina, criticizing refereeing decisions after his team's round of 16 defeat. Throughout the tournament, several brutal fouls by Argentine players went unpunished, leading many opponents and observers to believe the team enjoyed impunity. Additionally, violent incidents involving Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes against Spanish players after the final sparked widespread outrage.

In his diplomatic message, Infantino wrote:

"Dear President, yesterday, Sunday, July 19, 2026, in the magnificent New York-New Jersey stadium, Argentina won the silver medal at the 2026 World Cup, after a thrilling final against Spain. I wish to reiterate my most sincere congratulations for this important success for Argentine football.
