Arsenal are pushing to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, but their expected £70 million offer will fall short of Newcastle's valuation, which is at least £80 million. The Brazilian midfielder has told Newcastle he wants to leave, and personal terms with Arsenal are not expected to be an issue. However, Newcastle are determined to keep their captain after already losing key players Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Alexander Isak in recent transfer windows. Newcastle made a statement of intent by featuring Guimaraes prominently in their new away kit launch. The 28-year-old is expected to report for pre-season training next week and travel to Spain for the club's camp. Arsenal see Guimaraes as the ideal midfielder to help them compete for Premier League titles and European success.

Newcastle United are set to reject Arsenal's £70 million bid for Bruno Guimarães as the club fights to retain their captain, according to reports.
The Gunners are intensifying their efforts to sign the Brazilian, who was granted an extended break by Newcastle following his involvement in the 2026 World Cup. However, the player has informed the club that he wants to leave St James' Park.
Contact between Arsenal and Newcastle has been limited, with negotiations conducted through third parties. The Evening Standard understands that Arsenal's expected offer of £70 million will be swiftly turned down, as Newcastle are unwilling to entertain bids below £80 million.
Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle for Arsenal, as Guimarães is keen on a move to north London. However, securing Newcastle's approval for the sale will prove challenging, as the club digs in to retain their captain following a series of summer departures.
Newcastle's Summer Exits
Newcastle have already lost several key players:
- Anthony Gordon – joined Barcelona after a poor season, placing the club under financial pressure to sell.
- Sandro Tonali – moved to Tottenham in a £100 million deal, a more surprising departure.
- Alexander Isak – left within the last 12 months, having previously been among the club's three best players.
Losing Guimarães would raise further questions about the ambition of Newcastle's project.
Guimarães Statement of Intent
Newcastle have made their position clear regarding Guimarães' future. The Brazilian was prominently featured in the launch of the club's new away kit on Thursday, a clear statement of intent. The unveiling video opens with the words:
"What does the future of Newcastle United look like to us?"
The 28-year-old is expected to report for Newcastle training next week and is scheduled to travel to La Manga for the club's pre-season camp in Spain.
Last summer, Alexander Isak went on strike to force through his move to Liverpool, but it would be a major surprise if Guimarães followed suit.
Guimarães' Impact and Arsenal's Ambition
Signed in the first transfer window of the Saudi era at Newcastle, Guimarães has been a driving force behind the club's subsequent success. Last season, he scored nine Premier League goals — more than any of his teammates.
Arsenal view him as the ideal midfielder to drive them toward successive league titles and to take the final step in European competition.
