World Bank, Greater Chennai Corporation discuss funding for civic infrastructure projects

The partnership will help establish world-class health infrastructure and leverage World Bank expertise to drive sustainable urban development, says GCC Commissioner.

The World Bank will fund civic infrastructure projects of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to facilitate the transition to a circular economy, develop world-class health infrastructure, improve flood resilience, and create electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

On Thursday (July 23, 2026), GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran met with a high-level delegation from the World Bank Group to discuss the implementation of key urban, environmental, and infrastructure projects in the city with World Bank financial assistance.

The World Bank delegation included:

• Ommid Saberi – Principal Industry Specialist
• Nguyen Nhan – Global Operations Lead
• Autif Mohammed Sayyed – Green Building Expert

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Sameeran said:

"We discussed with the World Bank team integrated flood management in Chennai and flood resilience of the Corporation’s assets, public-private partnership opportunities like EV charging stations across the city, world-class infrastructure for GCC health centres and hospitals and schools, building rooftop solar and cooling."

Key Initiatives Discussed

Discussions centred around several key initiatives aimed at transforming Chennai Corporation infrastructure through World Bank financial assistance and technical support:

Climate Resilience

• Developing robust strategies for integrated flood and rescue management
• Implementing urban heat mitigation measures, such as cool-roof solutions, to reduce the urban heat island effect across Corporation buildings

Clean Energy and Sustainable Mobility

• Setting up a widespread network of EV charging stations at strategic locations
• Installing rooftop solar panels on administrative complexes and schools

Healthcare Infrastructure

• Elevating the Corporation’s medical facilities to global standards
• Equipping the public health system with advanced technical support for long-term readiness

Economic Sustainability

• Exploring strategies for asset monetisation
• Optimising the use of Corporation-owned lands and facilities to boost revenue generation

Additional Areas of Discussion

• Increasing revenue of the civic body
• Technical and viability gap funding for GCC projects
• Technical assistance for the circular economy

"Overall, this partnership leverages World Bank expertise to drive sustainable urban development and environmental conservation throughout the city," Mr. Sameeran said.
