TechAMD announced a multibillion-dollar chip and investment deal with AI lab Anthropic on July 22, 2026, its second major AI infrastructure agreement in three days. Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's MI450 accelerators starting in the first half of 2027, using AMD's Helios racks. AMD will also invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, turning the customer into a financial stakeholder. Additionally, AMD is in discussions to backstop some of Anthropic's future data center leases. The companies added an engineering partnership where AMD will use Anthropic's Claude models to improve its own chip design. Despite the deal's size, AMD shares fell 2.5% in premarket trading as analysts had already predicted the announcement. The article notes that investors had already priced in expectations after AMD's earlier Microsoft deal, and that every new customer raises the bar for the next one.
