Portuguese tennis player Jaime Faria suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the quarter-finals of the Millennium Estoril Open. The 22-year-old, ranked 88th in the world, served for the match against Italy's Luciano Darderi (ranked 21st) after taking a commanding lead of 6-2 and 5-3. However, Faria was broken while serving for the match, eventually losing the second set 7-5 and the decisive third set 6-2 in a battle lasting 2 hours and 29 minutes. Despite the loss, Faria had recorded quality wins earlier in the tournament against Botic van de Zandschulp and Gonzalo Bueno. He missed an opportunity to reach his first ATP semi-final, where he would have faced Belgian Alexander Blockx. As a consolation, Faria will rise to a career-best ranking of 79th on Monday.

Jaime Faria suffered a tough defeat in the quarter-finals of the Millennium Estoril Open. The Portuguese player, ranked 88th in the world, served for the match against Luciano Darderi (21st), but ended up losing in three sets.
The 22-year-old Portuguese delivered a superb performance up to 6-2 and 5-3, when he was broken, eventually losing the second set 7-5 and the third 6-2. The match lasted 2 hours and 29 minutes.
After recording quality wins against Botic van de Zandschulp (55th) and Gonzalo Bueno (180th), Faria missed an excellent opportunity to qualify for the semi-finals of an ATP tournament for the first time and face Belgian Alexander Blockx (38th), who will play against Darderi this Saturday.
Despite this setback, the Lisbon native will rise to 79th place in the rankings on Monday, the best of his career.
