The 2026 San Diego Comic-Con is witnessing a significant shift as podcast hosts become major attractions alongside traditional celebrities. The article highlights that Spotify and Warner Brothers podcasters are now conducting panels and generating significant buzz at the convention, which expects over 135,000 attendees. This trend underscores the growing mainstream appeal of live podcast shows, which have evolved from simple radio-style performances to big-budget spectacles featuring pyrotechnics. Notable events include the return of Marvel and DC Studios to Hall H after a year's absence, and a panel for the sequel 'Spaceballs: The New One'. The article also cites examples of live podcast success, such as 'Kill Tony' generating $11 million in tour revenue and venues like Madison Square Garden now categorizing podcast shows alongside concerts and comedy. Industry experts attribute this shift to podcast hosts becoming personalities that fans want to see in person.
Source report
At a typical San Diego Comic-Con, fans clamor to see celebrities such as Henry Cavill, Elle Fanning, Ryan Gosling, Mark Hamill, and Jason Momoa—all special guests in recent years. This year, however, a different dynamic is emerging, with several Spotify and Warner Brothers geek-friendly and pop culture podcasters hosting panels and generating buzz around the convention.
"This is a good example of a broader shift: podcast hosts have become personalities fans want to see in person alongside the casts, filmmakers and studios themselves," said Geoff Chow, Head of Podcast Studios at Spotify and Managing Director of The Ringer.
Comic-Con International 2026 Overview
Comic-Con International 2026 has kicked off in San Diego, bringing four days of studio announcements, celebrity panels, and fan events to one of the world's largest pop culture conventions. More than 135,000 attendees are expected through Sunday.
Founded in 1970 as a gathering of about 100 comic book fans in a hotel basement, Comic-Con now spans nearly 500,000 square feet of exhibit space and features:
- More than 1,000 exhibitors
- Roughly 2,000 hours of programming
- An estimated $160 million generated for the local economy
Much of the action centers on Hall H, the convention's famed 6,500-seat venue for the biggest studio reveals, where fans often begin lining up two days in advance to secure a spot.
Notable this year: Marvel and DC Studios return to Hall H after both skipped last year's convention. The SDCC schedule includes a panel for Spaceballs: The New One, a sequel that reunites original cast members with 100-year-old Mel Brooks nearly four decades after the original film.

Podcast Live Shows Packing Venues
"Live podcast shows can grow your listener base," said podcast consultant George Witt. "You can start small with a hotel conference room or a hall in a fire station."
Live shows have made a significant impact at venues that would never have been considered for a "podcast show" in the past. Madison Square Garden has hosted multiple sold-out podcast live shows, including:
- Annual Kill Tony performances
- Dropout's much-hyped Dimension 20 live show
Podcasts are now such a major draw that MSG's website has updated its event calendar to allow sorting by "concerts, comedy shows, and podcast shows." A recent Pollstar survey shows Kill Tony generated $11 million in live show tours.
Live shows have been part of podcasting since the early years, but the medium's growing mainstream appeal has evolved some of the biggest performances. Simple radio play-style performances are now supplemented with stylish presentation and big-budget spectacles—after all, where else can one get pyrotechnics during a game of Dungeons & Dragons?
Industry-Focused Live Events
Live shows can also center on podcasting as an industry. Witness the brilliantly conceived Speke Fest 2025: Night of the Living Pod, held last year on October 10–11 in Houston. Conceived by Speke Podcasting's Freddy Cruz—a former radio personality and current podcasting sensei—the event aimed to combat "Podfade," a common phenomenon where a podcast gradually decreases release frequency and stops producing new content without an official final announcement. Adding to its unique pedigree, the live event was held at The National Museum of Funeral History.
International Reach
The popularity of live shows is not limited to the U.S. On October 12, 2025, the PastMaster podcast team took over The Bedford in Balham, UK, in what gamemaster Claude called "the worst PastMaster on record." The show thrives in front of an audience of superfans—from mocking the Roman Emperor to kung-fu pole dancing in ancient Persia, the PastMaster community delivered. The episode will be available soon.
