Microsoft has announced a new Xbox Backward Compatibility for PC program, allowing gamers to play a selection of classic Xbox titles on PCs and handhelds, including the ROG Ally and Ally X. The initiative begins with four titles, which are available for purchase on PC and included in all Xbox Game Pass plans. Owners of digital copies on console can also play them on PC via Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The program is digital-only, excluding physical game owners. Enhanced features include up to 4x resolution scaling, VSync, fullscreen/windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, and anti-aliasing, with achievements being added to select original Xbox games. Minimum system requirements include Windows 11, 8GB RAM, and a GTX 950 or equivalent GPU. The announcement is framed as the start of a broader game preservation effort, coming amid backlash against Sony's move away from physical media.
Source report
Xbox has announced a new Backward Compatibility for PC program, enabling gamers to play a selection of classic Xbox titles on PCs and handheld devices. The company describes this initiative as the beginning of a broader push into Xbox game preservation.
The program launches with four titles now playable on PCs and handhelds, including the ROG Ally and Ally X.
"This marks the beginning of a broader effort to preserve Xbox games from the past and bring them to PC over time," said Jason Ronald, Xbox VP of "Next Generation," in a company blog post.
Alongside backward compatibility, Xbox says these games will include new features.
Available Titles
The four titles announced are:

All four games are available for purchase on PC and are included in all Xbox Game Pass plans. Players who already own these titles digitally on console can now play them on PC or handheld, with support for Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Important note: This appears to be a digital-only preservation effort. It does not support players who only own physical copies of these games. Xbox has reportedly been testing a method to digitize physical games since as far back as the Xbox One era, but that feature has not yet materialized.
Enhanced Graphics and Features
Alongside preserved original gameplay, Xbox claims these titles will allow users to customize graphics settings, including:
- Up to 4x resolution scaling
- VSync support
- Fullscreen and Windowed modes
- Anisotropic filtering
- Enhanced anti-aliasing
Additional features are planned for future updates. Notably, Xbox will also add achievements to select original Xbox games on both console and PC.
System Requirements
Users must meet the following system requirements to play these titles:
| Spec | Minimum Requirements | Recommended Specs | |------|---------------------|-------------------| | GPU | Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, Intel UHD 770, or Intel Arc A310 | Radeon RX 6800, Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti, or Intel Arc A770 | | CPU | Min 4 Cores: Intel Core i3-8100, AMD Ryzen 3 1200, or AMD Ryzen Z2 A Processor | 6 cores and 12 threads: Intel Core i5-10400, AMD Ryzen 5 3600, or AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme | | RAM | 8GB | 8GB | | DirectX | N/A | DirectX 12 API, Hardware Feature Level 11 | | OS | Windows 11 | Windows 11 | | Drivers | Latest version as of January 2026 | Latest version as of January 2026 |
Industry Context
Microsoft's emphasis on preserving older games is particularly noteworthy given recent backlash against Sony over its decision to end physical game support with its next console generation, as well as the shuttering of some of its online stores. While Xbox's digital-focused preservation effort still cannot match the solidarity of physical media preservation, the timing of this announcement appears to be more than coincidental.
