Valencia Oceanarium names grey shark 'Ferran' after Ferran Torres for marine conservation work

Hupu News | July 24th — According to World Sports, the Valencia Oceanarium has named a grey shark "Ferran" in recognition of Ferran Torres' contributions to marine conservation, particularly his role in raising public awareness about shark protection.

Ferran Torres is already a true "shark." After the Barcelona and Spain forward scored the winning goal in the World Cup final against Argentina, helping Spain win its second World Cup title in history, the Valencia Oceanarium named a grey shark after him.

However, the oceanarium stated that there is another reason for this move:

"This is to acknowledge the connection between the Valencia player and marine conservation efforts, especially his contribution to raising public awareness about the importance of protecting these animals."

In response to Ferran Torres' nickname "Shark," the oceanarium selected a male grey shark about two meters in length. The Valencia Oceanarium hopes to further convey the message that "these animals are iconic and an indispensable part of maintaining the normal functioning of the ecosystem." The grey shark is currently listed as an "endangered" species.

Ferran Torres has always maintained a close connection with his hometown. In 2024 and 2025, he served as an ambassador for the Oceanarium Foundation for two consecutive years, and "Shark" is his well-known nickname.

During his collaboration with the oceanarium, Ferran gained a deeper understanding of the biology of these sharks. Additionally, about 100 participants in Ferran's summer camp visited the Valencia Oceanarium and took part in an educational activity focused on marine biodiversity, animal knowledge, and reducing the impact of human activities on the ocean.

For Ferran Torres, this is another special honor. Over the past few years, he has repeatedly expressed his pride in the nickname "Shark" through social media.
